Endodontics Overview

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseased or injured (dental) pulp. The dental pulp is the part in the center of a tooth made up of living connective tissue and cells called odontoblasts. The pulp is important during a tooth's growth and development. However, once a tooth is fully mature it can survive without the pulp, because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. The only remaining function of pulp at that time is to provide thermal sensation to the tooth.

Endodontic treatment is required when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. There can be number of reasons for inflammation or infection such as: deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. If infected pulp is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abcess.

Signs of pulp damage are as follows:

  1. Soreness in the tooth/teeth or in gums
  2. Swelling in the gums
  3. Sensitive to heat and cold
  4. Bleeding gums
  5. Staining or Yellowing of the tooth
  6. Pliability in lymph nodes
